Chhapra City

Chhapra is a city and the headquarters of Saran district in the Indian state of Bihar. It is situated near the junction of Ghaghara river and Ganges River. Chhapra grew in importance as a river based market in the 18th century when the Dutch, French and English established saltpeter refineries in the area.  Bhojpuri is common languages in the states of Maharaja Bhoj, especially in Bhojpur district and the surrounding area. It  has its own script known as Kaithi because Kayastha were responsible for literacy. Chhapra Ara and Balia are often colloquially referred to as the "ABC" region of Bhojpuri indentured labores of this region have taken Bhoipuri across the Indian border to Fiji and Guyana.
